Riambel Beach Horse Riding

Unlike the crowded northern beaches, Riambel remains a fishing village first, tourism second, and its three-kilometre strand sees more local nets drying than resort umbrellas. The centre maintains a stable of twelve horses, most of them crossbred Creole-Arabian mounts accustomed to the humidity and the footing where firm sand gives way to tidal pools.

Riambel Beach itself lies within the wider Savanne district, a region known for salt pans, colonial-era sugar estates, and a coral reef that runs parallel to shore at a distance of four hundred metres. That offshore barrier keeps the lagoon shallow and calm, rarely exceeding chest depth even at high tide, and the water temperature holds steady near 26°C year-round. The beach is public land under Mauritian law, so entrance is free, though riding activities require a booked package through the equestrian centre or a handful of smaller operators along Montocchio Lane. Most rides depart twice daily, timed to avoid the midday glare that turns the sand into a mirror.

The southern coast of Mauritius has historically been agricultural rather than touristic. Sugarcane cultivation dominated the region from the eighteenth century onward, and many of the inland trails used by the centre today follow old estate roads that once connected mills to the port at Bel Ombre. Horses were the primary means of transport and labour until mechanisation arrived in the mid-twentieth century. The modern equestrian centre preserves that working tradition, offering rides that trace the boundary between cane fields and littoral forest, a ribbon of casuarina and veloutier trees that stabilises the dunes.

Riambel beach horse riding tours range from hour-long trots along the waterline to half-day excursions that combine beach and inland trail. Guides lead single-file groups of four to six riders, adjusting pace according to experience level. The horses walk through shallow water, their hooves kicking up plumes of fine coral sand, and pause at intervals near the reef edge where the lagoon deepens into bands of indigo and turquoise. Photographers favour the late-afternoon light, when the sun drops behind the coastal hills and the horses cast long shadows across the wet sand. The centre operates seven days a week, with extended hours Monday through Saturday and a shorter Sunday morning window that caters to local riders.
